In the world of research, think of these three metrics as the academic GPS that helps you navigate, evaluate, and compare the most influential journals and authors in your field.

What is Impact Factor?

The Impact Factor is the veteran celebrity of academic metrics. Developed by Clarivate, it measures how often an average article in a specific journal gets cited.

How it works?

It looks at a tight, 2-year window. To get the Impact Factor for a specific year, it counts all the citations received in that year by papers published in that journal during the previous two years.

It is primarily used by researchers to decide where to submit their papers for maximum visibility, and by universities to judge the prestige of a scientist’s published work.

What is CiteScore?

CiteScore is the modern challenger to the Impact Factor. Created by Elsevier’s Scopus database, it does a very similar job but prefers a longer, broader view of a journal’s influence.

How it works?

Instead of a 2-year window, CiteScore uses a 4-year window. It divides the total number of citations a journal receives over a rolling 4-year period by the total number of items published in that same 4-year timeframe.

Like IF, it helps authors evaluate journal quality. Because it includes more types of documents (like conference papers) and covers a longer timeframe, it is highly valued in fields where research moves a bit slower or relies heavily on computer science and engineering conferences.

What is h-index?

While the first two metrics judge the journal, the h-index is personal—it mostly judges the individual author. It balances how much you write with how much people actually care about what you wrote.

How it works?

An author has an h-index of h if they have published h papers that have each been cited at least times.For example, if an author has five published papers and each has received at least five citations, then the author’s h-index is 5. If the author wrote 100 papers but they all get zero citations, then the author’s h-index stays 0.

Where it is used?

It is heavily used by hiring committees, grant funders, and universities to evaluate an individual researcher’s career impact without letting one single “super-popular” paper distort their overall achievement.
